At Polybush, we spend our working days thinking about suspension bushes, vehicle reliability and keeping vehicles on the road. For Amanda, that has become an unexpectedly personal connection.
During the week, Amanda works at Polybush, helping customers, processing orders and supporting the team that supplies polyurethane suspension bushes for everything from cars and classic vehicles to vans, buses and commercial vehicles. Outside of work, she volunteers as a Community Welfare Responder with the Welsh Ambulance Service.
On the surface, the two roles could hardly seem more different. One is based around vehicle components and customer service; the other involves responding to people in their local community when they need help. But there is one rather significant connection between them: ambulances!
Since joining Polybush, Amanda has discovered just how broad the world of suspension bushes really is.
Polybush is a UK manufacturer of polyurethane suspension bushes, supplying applications across cars, vans, 4x4s, buses and commercial vehicles. The commercial side of the business is particularly important because the vehicles involved are often working vehicles, covering high mileages and carrying people, equipment or heavy loads every day.
For a fleet operator, a worn suspension bush is rarely just a small mechanical problem. Suspension wear can lead to poor handling, changes in suspension geometry, tyre wear and repeated component failures. More importantly, when a commercial vehicle is off the road, it can affect the entire operation around it.
That is why Polybush focuses on developing durable polyurethane suspension bushes for demanding commercial applications. The commercial range is designed to help reduce repeat failures, workshop time and vehicle downtime, while providing a long-lasting alternative to conventional rubber bushes. Our bushes offer four to five times the service life of rubber in suitable applications and are resistant to oil, fuel and road contaminants.
For Amanda, learning about these applications has changed the way she looks at the vehicles she sees every day.
The Polybush commercial range covers a wide variety of applications, from light commercial vehicles and delivery vans to buses and specialist vehicles. That includes popular platforms such as the Ford Transit, Fiat Ducato, Peugeot Boxer, Citroën Relay and Iveco Daily, alongside suspension applications for buses and other commercial vehicles. Polybush also produces suspension bushes for vehicles used in demanding fleet and passenger-transport environments.
The reason this matters is simple: commercial vehicles are expected to work – A delivery van might cover hundreds of miles each week. A minibus could spend every day transporting passengers. A bus has to cope with repeated loading, braking and acceleration. Specialist vehicles can have even more demanding operating conditions.
In these environments, replacing a suspension bush with another component that is likely to fail again can become an expensive cycle of parts and labour. Polybush’s commercial suspension solutions are designed to address that problem by providing a durable polyurethane replacement that can help reduce repeat maintenance and keep vehicles working for longer.
For Amanda, however, one particular type of commercial vehicle has extra significance. The ambulance.
As a Community Welfare Responder with the Welsh Ambulance Service, Amanda can be called to appropriate 999 incidents in her local area. The role involves attending patients, carrying out initial welfare checks and observations, and passing relevant information back to ambulance service clinicians. It is a role that can be challenging. You never know exactly what you will encounter when you respond to a call, and every patient and situation is different but also incredibly rewarding.
Being able to support somebody when they are frightened, unwell or unsure about what is happening can make a real difference. Staying calm, communicating clearly and reassuring someone that help is on the way are all important parts of the role. And that is where Amanda’s two worlds unexpectedly overlap.
During her working day at Polybush, she might be dealing with an order for suspension bushes that will be fitted to a commercial vehicle. Outside work, she could find herself responding to an emergency in one of those very same types of vehicles. The connection is unusual, but it has given her a different appreciation of what vehicle reliability means.
A suspension bush is only one component of an ambulance, but the reliability of every component matters when a vehicle is being used as part of an emergency service.
Ambulances can cover significant mileage and spend much of their working lives on the road. They also have to carry medical equipment, crews and patients while providing a stable and controlled platform in a wide variety of conditions – Polybush has experience of developing solutions for precisely these kinds of demanding applications.
One example is the company’s work with Fiat Ducato-based ambulances. Polybush developed replacement polyurethane bushes for an application where the original bushes were not available separately, meaning operators were being faced with replacing larger assemblies when only the bushes had failed.
The resulting Polybush solution allowed the worn bushes to be replaced separately, helping reduce parts costs and vehicle downtime. Our case study records a saving of more than £700 on parts alone! That is a good example of what the commercial side of Polybush is really about.
It is not simply about making a different type of suspension bush. It is about identifying where a vehicle is experiencing a recurring problem and developing a practical solution that helps the operator keep the vehicle working.
This approach is particularly relevant to commercial fleet operators.
When a passenger vehicle, delivery van or specialist vehicle is off the road, the cost is not necessarily limited to the replacement part. There can be workshop labour, lost operating time, vehicle replacement costs and disruption to the wider fleet. Polybush’s commercial suspension solutions are designed around reducing those problems. The company highlights longer service life, resistance to oil and road contaminants, reduced repeat failures and easier installation as some of the benefits of polyurethane over conventional rubber bushes.
The same thinking applies across different types of commercial vehicles.
Polybush’s Iveco Daily range, for example, covers vehicles used in fleet maintenance, passenger transport, council fleets, community transport, delivery operations and specialist applications. These vehicles can cover extremely high mileages while carrying heavy loads or passengers, making suspension durability particularly important, we’re also continuing to expand our commercial range, including applications for popular vans such as the Vivaro, Trafic and Primastar.
For Amanda, seeing this side of the business has highlighted just how important the vehicles are that Polybush products ultimately become part of.
Working at Polybush has also given Amanda an insight into the amount of work that goes into something most people would never think twice about. A suspension bush might be a relatively small component, but its design and material choice can have a significant effect on how a suspension system behaves. Polybush uses different polyurethane grades for different applications, allowing the characteristics of the bush to be matched to the vehicle and how it is used. Polybush designs its bushes for dry fitting, meaning no grease is required during installation.
For commercial operators, that attention to detail can make a difference. The objective is not simply to replace a worn component. It is to provide a solution that is appropriate for the vehicle, the suspension system and the conditions in which it operates. That is particularly important when the vehicle is part of a working fleet.
Amanda’s two roles may be very different, but there is a common thread running through both. At Polybush, the focus is on helping vehicles remain reliable, serviceable and on the road.
As a Community Welfare Responder, the focus is on helping people when they need support. Both involve being part of something bigger.
A suspension bush might not seem particularly important when viewed on its own. But put that bush into a commercial vehicle that needs to cover thousands of miles, or an ambulance that needs to be available when somebody calls 999, and its role becomes much easier to appreciate
The same applies to the people involved. A Polybush customer might only speak to Amanda for a few minutes while placing an order or asking about a part. A patient might only meet Amanda for a short time during one of the most difficult moments of their day. In both cases, doing the job properly matters.
Amanda is proud to work at Polybush, and equally proud to volunteer with the Welsh Ambulance Service. She never expected the two roles to have such an unusual connection, but it has changed the way she looks at the vehicles around her.
When she sees an ambulance now, she does not just see an emergency vehicle. She sees the crews who depend on it, the engineers and technicians who maintain it, the people who keep it supplied and the patients who may need it at any moment. And, somewhere within that story, there could be a small polyurethane suspension bush manufactured here in Wrexham.
It is a useful reminder that keeping a vehicle moving is rarely about one component or one person. It is the result of hundreds of individual parts, decisions and people working together.
For Amanda, that makes her two roles feel a little less different than they first appeared. One helps keep vehicles moving. The other helps people when they need it most.
Two very different roles, one unexpected connection, and two things to be proud of.
